MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing Topical MSICS using a superior rectus suture (with a cotton pledget) were divided into two groups Group A with lignocaine 4 % only and group B with additional intracameral lignocaine. A modified Wong Baker hand shake technique was used, to assess the discomfort felt at each step of the surgery and graded as mild, moderate and severe. Surgeons’ Objective Clinical assessment of the patient was graded at 1–9. The average time per surgery was 5mts.
Results: 40 patients, 20 in each group (11 males, 9 females in group A.10 males, 10 females in group B) were enrolled in the study. The mean pain score by the visual pain scale was 0.714(SD=0.638) in group A and 0.412(SD=1.07) in group B.
Patients who were operated under topical anaesthesia with intracameral lidocaine (group B) 4 patients (20%) experienced mild pain during the bridle suture and other steps of surgery were pain free according to modified pain scale. In group A of 20 patient 6 patient
