PURPOSE: To assess the clinical outcome following therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty with the following parameters: elimination of corneal disease or infection, reduction in pain and restoration of structural integrity.
METHOD:This study was conducted on 25 patients with corneal ulcers which were refractory to medical treatment, impending or already perforated who underwent TPK. Patients were subjected to detailed evaluation and microbiology of ulcer pre operatively. Follow up examination was done.
RESULTS: The incidence of corneal ulcers was more in males.92% were found positive for organisms of which 39% were bacterial 43% were fungal and 12% mixed.Anatomical integrity was achieved in all cases. Clear grafts were obtained in 52% and semi-transparent in 24%. A BCVA of <6/60 were found in 13 eyes, <3/60 in 6 eyes, HM in 3 cases and 3 remained PL+ve. Regrafting was required in 3 cases.
CONCLUSION: TKP provides structural stability, ambulatory vision & preserve potentiality of vision.
