Purpose: To compare defocus curve (DC) and contrast sensitivity (CS) measurements in subjects implanted with aspheric IOLs.
Methods: Eyes undergoing cataract extraction were implanted with Tecnis (T) or Hoya (H) aspheric IOL. Defocus curves between −4.0 and +4.0 diopter (D) were evaluated using direct comparison method (DCM). Photopic and Scotopic CS was measured using Pelli-Robson CS chart.
Results: 50 eyes of 29 patients and 45 eyes of 34 patients were implanted with T- and H-IOL respectively. The mean (SD) age of the subjects were 62.6 (8.6) and 57.7 (8.7) years in T- and H-IOL respectively. The DC indicated that the T-IOL group performed statistically significantly better for lenses from +3.5D to +0.5D, (p<0.05). Otherwise both the IOLs performed similarly for rest of the dioptric values (p>0.05). Also Photopic and Scotopic CS was similar among two groups (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Overall visual quality did not change in both the IOLs despite the difference in IOLs asphericity values.
