AIM: To compare efficacy of collagen matrix with freshly harvested Amniotic membrane as subconjunctival implant following surgical excision of pterygium.

METHOD: 23 cases of pterygium underwent surgical excision. 10 cases were augmented with subconjunctival implantation of collagen matrix (Gp A) and 13 cases were augmented with freshly harvested amniotic membrane (Gp B). Gp A had 9 cases of primary and 1 case of recurrent Pterygium whereas Gp B had 11 cases of primary and 2 cases of recurrent Pterygium. The cases were followed up weekly for a month and thereafter monthly for six months, following surgery. One case with recurrent Pterygium in Gp B developed Pterygium after 03 months. No recurrence was seen in other cases. 03 cases developed episcleritis in both groups.

CONCLUSION: The results with collagen matrix implant following Pterygium surgery were found comparable with surgeries augmented with Amniotic Membrane Implantation.
