Purpose: To report intraoperative complications rates of cataract surgeries performed at Secondary center (SC) of an eye-health-pyramid and their outcomes.
Methods: Audit of total 20,164 EMR of manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and phacoemulsification performed in 2015 in 12 SC. Pre & post surgery visual acuity (VA) and intraoperative complications were recorded. Good outcome was defined as VA >or=6/18 and poor outcome was defined as VA <6/60 in the operated eye.
Results: 85% eyes underwent MSICS. Intraoperative complications rates were 3.8% (n=658) in MSICS and 2.8% (n=85) in phacoemulsification. Posterior capsular rent (PCR) was most common -2.9% (n=492 eyes) in MSICS and 2.5% (n=77) in phacoemulsification. Good outcome was seen in 64.7% and 33.58% in phacoemulsification and MSICS group respectively. 7.35% (phacoemulsification) and 27.81%(MSICS) had poor outcome.
Conclusions: Intraoperative complications rate were comparable. Good outcome was more in phacoemulsification
