FP1737 : A Custom Made Logmar Natural Symbol Chart to Measure Visual Acuity in School Children and Illiterates

Purpose: Comparison of visual acuity obtained from a custom made LogMAR symbols chart (Varaha Natural Symbols Chart) for school children, illiterates and literates with results obtained from “E” and Lea symbols chart. Evaluation of requirement for using training cards and comparing it between the charts.

Methodology: Inclusion criteria: 6 to 39 years, both sexes, with/without refractive errors, good binocular vision, unfamiliar with all charts. Exclusion criteria: Unwilling for tests, with ocular pathology, developmental delay, strabismus. Varaha natural symbol chart conforms to the standards set by the committee on vision standards; uses easily identifiable natural symbols Sun, Moon, Star, and Cloud symbols as optotypes. 3 groups 50 patients each. Group 1(pediatric): 6-18 years; group 2: Illiterate (19-39 years); group 3: Literate (19-39 years). Requirement of training cards for each chart was noted. Vision was tested using all charts in all groups .
