FP1449 : Predictors of clinical outcome in ophthalmia nodosa in tertiary eye centre in south India.

Girish Bharat Velis(v16197)

Purpose: To describe the spectrum, clinical profile and outcome of ophthalmia nodosa (ON).

Materials and methods: Retrospective data of ON due to caterpillar (CP) hair injury from 1 January 2015 – 30 April 2016 were analysed.

Results: Among 192 eyes of 186 patients, left eyes (58%) were predominant. Predominant among them were adults (80%) and males (1.2:1). Presenting BCVA ranged from 6/6 to 6/36. Anatomically it was located in tarsal conjunctiva 168 eyes (87.4%), bulbar 8 (4%), cornea 46 (24%), uvea 9 (4%), vitreous 14 (7%), retina 3 (1.5%). Steroids were used topically in 20 eyes (10%) with iritis, orally in 2 (1%) with sterile vitritis. 2 eyes (1%) with endophthalmitis needed core vitrectomy. Retained deep intracorneal hair, prolonged contact with CP hair and injury with multiple CP hair were risk factors for severe inflammation. Final BCVA ranged from 6/6 to 6/18.

Conclusion: Meticulous evaluation, focussed treatment, careful review results in excellent final visual outcome.
