Aim:To assess the feasibility and complications associated with IOL implantation in pediatric traumatic cataract
Methodology:Retrospective analysis of case sheets of children who were operated for traumatic cataract were analyzed and among them 47 children with corneal injury minimally affecting visual axis and good visual outcome aged between 5-14 yrs from 2012-16 were included.
Results:The average age of 47 children operated was 11.2yrs.The duration of presentation after injury ranged from 1day-5yrs.Anterior segment showed anterior capsular tear(34.04%),PCR(4.3%),zonular dialysis(6.3%),iridodialysis(4.3%),traumatic mydriasis(14.8%).IOL was placed in the bag(63.8%),sulcus (21.3%),or partially in bag(14.9%). Postop uveitis was seen in 31.9%, IOP rise was seen in 4.3% children who recovered well with treatment. One month postop BCVA was better than 6/12 in 76.5% children.
Conclusions:IOL implantation gives a good outcome in pediatric traumatic cataract with minimal ocular injury
