PURPOSE: To describe an emergency scenario with blood spurting from the eye.
METHOD: A 40-year-old female presented with bleeding from her right eye following an avulsion injury with the edge of a door. On examination lower eyelid was avulsed from its medial edge. Further examination was not possible in view of blood spurting from the medial edge. Pressure was applied over the right carotid and right cheek to control the bleeding. Botroclot was applied. Stay ligature was applied medially after cleaning the field with suction. Pressure bandage was applied. Patient was taken to the operation theater where the lid was sutured in layers. Blood transfusion was given in view of volume loss.
RESULT: Patient was stable and lid architecture was maintained at postoperative day 7.
CONCLUSION: Lid avulsion injury can present as emergency with acute bleeding. Prompt ligature and surgery can be life saving.
