Pterygium is characterized by elastotic degeneration of conjunctiva.

Cause:  Exposure to ultraviolet light(from the sun)

Symptoms:

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Foreign body sensation

Corneal surface after Pterygium excision

  • Irregular corneal surface
  • Corneal scar
  • Residual astigmatism
  • Poor tear film distribution
  • Dallen formation

Innovative Motorized Diamond Burr

Inclusion criteria

  • Primary Pterygium
  • Progressive Pterygium
  • Grade 2 or above

Exclusion criteria

  • Recurrent Pterygium
  • Bi- headed Pterygium

Conclusion

  • Motorized diamond burr is an excellent tool for polishing of the cornea during primary Pterygium excision
  • Lesser intraopeartive time, early visual recovery, less corneal scar in post operative period are the inherent advantages of diamond burr polishing
