PURPOSE:To compare recurrence rate of pterygium and postoperative complications using technique of “Pterygium excision with symmetrical conjunctival flap transpositioning and using mitomycin C as an adjunctive therapy”.
METHODS:Prospective comparative study of 100 eyes of 100 patients presenting with primary pterygium,divided into 2 groups,using random number table.50 eyes treated with pterygium excision with symmetrical conjunctival flap transpositioning(group 1),and 50 eyes with above technique along with intraoperative mitomycin C 0.02% for 2 minutes (group 2). follow-up12months.
RESULTS:Mean age was35.66years.46 and44 patients in groups1 and 2 were not lost to follow up.More pterygium recurrences in group 1.6.5%in group 1, 2.27% in the group 2 had recurrence p=0.499.
CONCLUSION:This technique may be effective surgical alternative in preventing recurrence of primary pterygium.
