Background: Panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) may increase the retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFL) in the short term, presumably related to laser-induced axonal injury and edema.PRP induced RNFL thickness may be presumed for glaucoma.
Methods: prospective interventional case series in 42 proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients,Clinical examination, fundus photography and spectral domain OCT were performed at baseline, 1 year and 3 years of followup.
Results: At 1yearfollowup there is significant reduction in followup in RNFL thickness from baseline in inferior, superior and nasal quadrants and average thicknessand at 3 years followup there is a significant reduction in RNFL thickness from baseline in inferior, superior quadrants and average thickness.
Conclusion: PRP induced changes in RNFL thickness should be an important consideration in diagnosis and evaluation of Glaucoma patients who have undergone PRP for diabetic retinopathy.
