PURPOSE: To evaluate the surgical outcome of various surgeries for treating retinal detachment (RD) associated with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR).
METHODS: It’s a Retrospective study. The primary outcome was anatomical success after surgery .The visual acuity (VA) change was the secondary outcome.
RESULTS: 20 eyes of 18 patients were included.18 patients (90%) had macula-off RD and 2 eyes (10%) had macula-on RD.12 eyes (60%) underwent scleral buckling, 8 eyes (40%) underwent scleral buckling and vitrectomy.13 eyes (65%) were reattached with the primary surgery. Anatomical success rate of primary surgery in scleral buckling only group is 50% (4/8) and in scleral buckling and vitrectomy 75% (9/12).7 eyes underwent repeat surgery, of which 6 eyes were reattached.
CONCLUSIONS: FEVR-induced RDs are challenging, of variable complexity, and place a high demand on careful preoperative evaluation and surgical skill to deliver good results.
