Purpose: Present study is aimed at studying epidemiological and clinical profile of ocular trauma in Jharkhand.
Methods: A observational study of all ocular trauma cases during September2014- March2016 in OPD and Emergency in Tertiary care centre. Demographic profile, nature, cause of injury were recorded. Detailed ophthalmic examination including visual acuity, slit lamp examination, B-scan and Gonioscopy done.
Result: The study included 836 injured eyes from 819 patients. Mean age group was 34.5yrs(1-68yrs) predominant age group 21-40yrs(55.6%). Male(73%), Female(26.8%)(p<0.05), 657(78.6%)closed globe injuries, 179(21.4%)open globe injuries(p<0.05), chemical injuries6(0.7%), thermal injuries4(0.47%). Workplace injuries were most common(44.4%). Patients with open globe injuries had poor visual outcome as compared to closed globe injuries.
Conclusion: Targeting groups most at risk with health education providing effective eye protection may decrease the occurrence of ocular injuries.
