FP544 : Profile of Ocular Trauma in A Tertiary Care Hospital

Aim: To report trends of sight threatening ocular trauma in a tertiary are hospital

Method:1 year prospective, observational study of patients with ocular trauma admitted in a tertiary care centre (January2015-december2015) with study variables as demographics,time,place and nature of trauma, type of injury, time of management and visual outcomes following primary repair.

Result: 148 eyes of 140 patients with serious ocular injury were studied. Men had 3 fold higher rate of injury than women. Work place related penetrating trauma was the most common injury in adults. Trauma with stationary items during school vacations of summer was common in children. Fire cracker injuries to children and bystanders were common during festival of Diwali. BCVA post repair was1/60.

Conclusion: Parental monitoring to children and educating people doing high risk tasks such as drilling, grinding, chain sawing would be a good target to reduce ocular injuries. Adequate eye protection is often a simple step.
