Materials and methods : A randomized, single blind, comparative interventional study was done on 50 patients (100eyes) of vernal keratoconjunctivitis(VKC). One eye of every patient was randomly assigned for Fluorometholone(0.1%) and the other to Cyclosporine(0.05%) Symptom and sign scoring was done on days 0,7,14,30 and 90.
Results : Symptoms and signs mean score at the base line in Cyclosporine and Fluorometholone groups showed no significant difference in both groups . Cyclosporine group showed statistically significant reduction in symtoms and signs mean score by day 30 compared to other group and had no effect on intraocular pressure throughout the study.
Conclusion : Both topical cyclosporine(0.05%) and fluorometholone (0.1%) are effective in controlling the symptoms and signs of Vernal kerato conjunctivitis(VKC). According to our study topical cyclosporine (0.05%) should be the first line of treatment of VKC in terms of efficacy and safety for long term use.
