Aim: To determine the association of hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) with central & hemi-central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO & HCRVO), & the correlation of serum homocysteine with vitamin B12 & folate levels.
Methods: A case-control study was done between patients with CRVO & HCRVO, and age & gender matched controls without CRVO & HCRVO. Ophthalmological examination & investigations were done. Fasting blood homocysteine, vitamin B12 & folate levels were measured.
Results: There was no statistically significant association of Hhcy with CRVO & HCRVO (p=0.81); however, there was a statistically significant association of hypertension, hyperlipidemia & abnormal blood profile with CRVO & HCRVO. There was a negative correlation between serum homocysteine & vitamin B12 levels (Pearson correlation coefficient -0.3874), & between serum homocysteine & folate levels (Pearson correlation coefficient -0.3886).
Conclusion: Hhcy was not found to be an independent risk factor for CRVO & HCRVO
