Aim : This study is to address clinical profile of paediatric cataract and visual outcome post surgery in a tertiary care centre.

Method : A prospective study from January 2015 to April 2016 of 124 children aged 0-14 years with cataract who underwent cataract surgery for non traumatic and traumatic cataract in a tertiary care centre with mean follow-up of 3 months. Cases were studied in terms of demography, age at presentation, morphology, other ocular and systemic associations, type of surgery and visual outcome.

Results : This study revealed the mean age of paediatric cataract surgery was 6.97 years with lamellar morphology being most common. The mean final postoperative best corrected visual acuity was 6/12 in non traumatic cases and 2/60 in traumatic cases.

Conclusion : Our findings provide evidence of delay in presentation to hospital to be the main cause of poor visual outcome. Good visual outcome can be achieved with early surgical intervention and appropriate visual rehabilitation.
