Purpose : to compare the outcome of AMT and CAG transplantation after pterygium excision in patients with nasal and temporal pterygium in the same eye.

Methods : total of 31 eyes of 31 patients with previously unoperated double pterygium were enrolled in the randomised trial, of which 30 patients remained in follow up for 6 months. Eyes with double pterygium were randomised to either nasal AMT & temporal CAG (nasal AMT group) or to nasal CAG & temporal AMT (temporal AMT group). The primary pre specified outcome was pterygium recurrence at the excised site 6 months after pterygium excision.

Results : at 6 months, none of the 30 pterygia randomised to CAG showed recurrence in either nasal or temporal location. 8 of 30 pterygia randomised to AMT exhibited recurrence at 6 months, with 4 temporal recurrences and 4 nasal recurrences. Recurrence rate was significantly higher for AMT than CAG, but not significantly different between the nasal & temporal sites

Conclusion: CAG in pterygium surgery led to fewer recurrences than AMT, irrespective o
