FP717: Implications of Patching in Older Amblyopic Children

Aim: To study the improvement achieved by patching in amblyopic children between 8 to 15 years of age.
Material And Methods: It was a prospective observational type of study with sample size of 41 done in a tertiary care Eye Hospital. Patients were divided into two groups : Group 1: with no prior intervention, Group 2: with prior intervention before the age of 7years . Patching was done on child’s better eye every day for 6hours and the patient was followed up for 1year. Chi square and Student t Test were applied for evaluating results.
Results: Mean visual acuity showed an improvement of 29.4% in the Group1 and 18.2% among the Group2 from initial visit and the improvement was significant, p<0.05.
Conclusion: Significant improvement in the visual acuity was achieved after patching was done for 1 year. Significant improvement was noted in both the groups irrespective of history of prior treatment. Improved visual outcome was noted with increased compliance.
