Purpose:To understand the presentation and the systemic association of branch retinal vein occlusions in a hospital based study in southern India.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of our hospital from 2005-2015 and 446 eyes of 412 patients diagnosed with treatment naïve branch retinal vein occlusions were included. We excluded BRVO in uveitic conditions.
Results:We had 272 male and 174 female eyes with BRVO. Mean age at presentation was 62.57 years. Hypertension was present in 63.5% cases. 52.9% eyes had superotemporal BRVO. Macular edema was present in 66.6% eyes. 17.9% eyes presented with ocular neovascularisation. OCT was done in 218 cases. 40.8% of these showed cystoid macular edema. 43 eyes needed laser iridotomy for occludable angles. The central foveal thickness (CFT) correlated positively with logMAR visual acuity.
Conclusions:BRVO is second most common retinal vascular disorder and is positively associated with hypertension and narrow angles
