A study to establish correlation between pterygium and astigmatism
Aim: To evaluate the corneal refractive status before and after pterygium surgery and its relationship with pre-operative and post operative pterygium size.
Material and Methods: Retrospective study was conducted on 82 eyes of 75 patients with primary pterygium. Objective refraction, subjective refraction, keratometry and BCVA were assessed of the patients Pre-operatively and post-operatively after 2 weeks.
Result: Mean size of Pterygium was 2.83 mm. The magnitude of pre-operative pterygium induced astigmatism was 3.38±1.66 diopter which was seen to be increasing with size of pterygium. Post operative mean after two weeks was 1.73±1.43 diopter.
Conclusion: Pterygium size has a direct relationship with corneal astigmatism and post-operatively there is significant improvement in visual acuity.
