Aim-To study incidence of sight threatening lesions(STL) in MBL pts after 2 yrs of MDT.
Method- Thorough ocular examination conducted in two leprosy villages.236MBL pts examined after completion of 2yrs of MDT.The incidence of ocular pathology was calculated as number of event per person& follow up the pt who did not have specific finding before completion of MDT
RESULTS- 236 pts attending their ophthalmic visit are examined.128(54%) had ocular involvement.94pts(40%) had visual impairment.28(12%)pts had bilateral, 66(27%)had unilateral blindness. 112(47%)pts had more than one lesion.Out of 128,64pts showed STL were lagopthalmos 45 (35%),corneal hypoesthesia 34(27%),exposure keratitis 28(28%),corneal opacity 30(23%),iridocyclitis 23(18%),cataract 20(17%)
CONCLUSION-Ocular complications are common and potentially STL occur in leprosy pts even after completion of MDT .So regular periodic service and outreach by eye-care provider should be incorporated into leprosy eye programme.
