FP286 : Prevalence of Ocular Morbidity in School Going Children

Aim -To evaluate prevalence of ocular morbidity in school going children age 6 –16 yrs in public schools urban & rural areas of Kanpur city.

Methods & Material-A cross sectional study done on 1149 urban &956 rural school going children& were screened with Snellen’s-e-chart,ishihara-chart,pinhole,cover uncover test,comprehensive ocular examination with torch light,slit lamp with 90D,&direct ophthalmoscope.

Result-Overall prevalence of ocular morbidity 38.82%,rural(43.30%)&urban(35.07%).Prevalence of refractive error being maximum(26.19%)followed by squint(2.78%)vit.A deficiency(1.91%)blephritis(1.83%)colour-blindness(1.2%)stye(0.78%)ptosis(0.35%)in urban area.In rural area refractive error 15.9% but prevalence of vit. A deficiency(12.86%),blephritis(5.43%),stye(2.40%)was highly significant(P<0.0001).

Conclusion-High prevalence of ocular morbidity was observed. Refractive errors being most common& Vit. A deficiency,blephritis,stye significantly more prevalent in rural area.
