Purpose: To report two cases of CRAO in uncomplicated falciparum malaria.

Design: Retrospective observational case series

Participants: 2 patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria who developed CRAO

Methods: The diagnosis of CRAO was made based on clinical examination and fundus fluorescein angiography. Rapid diagnostic test and peripheral blood smear examination was used for diagnosis of falciparum malaria. The patients also underwent a complete hematologic, and systemic evaluation.

Results: The etiology of CRAO was presumed to be due to falciparum malaria. This presumption was made since the patients’ systemic evaluation and investigations were unremarkable and also due to the fact that they observed visual loss after the onset of malaria.

Conclusion: The vascular complications of falciparum malaria are rare in uncomplicated cases. Our paper highlights an important ocular complication that has not been reported before.
