We report a rare case of orbital osteomyelitis in a child following dengue fever.A two year old female child presented with one week history of recurrent fever and right periorbital swelling following recovery from dengue fever two weeks ago.Examination of the right eye revealed ptosis, tender periorbital swelling with induration and restricted elevation of eyeball.Child was started on intravenous antibiotics suspecting orbital cellulitis. The next day she developed tender swellings over the right cheek and infrascapular region.MRI and bone scan findings were suggestive of orbital cellulitis with underlying osteomyelitis of the frontal bone and right scapula.Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus was grown on blood culture and ultrasound guided aspirate.Child recovered completely following systemic vancomycin therapy.Osteomyelitis of the orbital bones, though rare in this antibiotic era can occur in post viral immunosuppressed states and clinicians should be aware of this entity.
