Aim:To report results of vitrectomy with gas tamponade for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) with inferior breaks.
Methods:Retrospective analysis of 17 eyes with fresh RRD – inferior breaks. MIVS was done with Endolaser around the break/360degrees. 10% C3F8 Gas-Air mixture tamponade used. Face down for 1 week post-op. Retinal attachment and vision gain evaluated.
Results: Age:16-72years. 14males. Follow up:3-16 months(mean 5.94). 10phakic eyes. RD in 1 quadrant -1 eye, 2 quad in 9 and 3 quad in 7. Macula spared in 8 eyes. 14 had HSTs, 3 atrophic holes and 7 lattice. 11 eyes had single break and rest had multiple. Retina attached in all eyes. Mean logMAR vision in Macula-off group was 1.6 pre-op and 0.79 at 3 months(p=0.000375-highly significant). In Macula-on group 0.5 and 0.275 respectively(p=0.37 not significant).
Conclusion:Short term gas tamponade and laser is adequate to obtain firm sealing of inferior breaks vis-a-vis retinal attachment, abnegating silicone oil +/- buckle.
