IC193 – ‘SPLENDOUR AFTER DEPARTURE – LIGHTING UP LIVES’: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO SUCCESSFUL EYE BANKING

Dr. Lilan Bhat [B13765] – COCHIN

Eye banking is a corner stone of elimination of corneal blindness. Corneal transplantation is considered to be the most successful among all forms of organ transplant procedures. Ironically the impact of shortage of donor eyes is most glaring in the Asian countries where corneal diseases account for a large proportion of curable
blindness. Our intention is to encourage and facilitate Ophthalmic institutions and Ophthalmologists in becoming a part of the eye banking programs. The instruction course aims to provide guidelines for establishing an eye bank, HCRP program, tissue recovery and distribution, quality assurance, uniform medical standards and sustainability. The experiences with our eye bank model will be discussed with relevance to the global scenario, so that a consensus is reached regarding the formulation of policies and steps which can be undertaken in the future. Together let us combat misconcepts and notions so that those immortal eyes raise a ray of hope in the horizon.
