Traumatic cataract occurs secondary to blunt or penetrating ocular trauma. traumatic cataracts are associated with corneal injuries, opacities and other co- morbidities like iridodialysis, vitreous hemorrhage, macular hole etc, which affect the visual outcome of the patient.
objective: to highlight various surgical modalities to approach various types of traumatic cataracts.
methods: soft cataracts were aspirated using unimanual or bimanual aspiration and a posterior capsulotomy was done via pars plana and/or corneal route. in membranous cataracts, we approached through posterior pars plana and membranous cataract was removed with vitreous cutter with iol insertion. this video demonstrates the various surgical techniques in different types of traumatic cataracts. in our experience of nearly 400 traumatic cataracts, majority of the patients who were treated on time regained good visual outcome.
