Dr. Onkar Chavan, Dr.Archana Sunil Nikose

Aims: To evaluate the clinical outcome and progression of diabetic retinopathy after phacoemulsification.

Methods: This prospective study was carried out between May 2015 to May 2016 which included 24 diabetic patients with or without diabetic retinopathy and 36 non-diabetic controls who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification with foldable IOL. All patients were followed up on 1 week, 1, 3 and 6 month. On every follow up BCVA, anterior segment, fundus photograph was done.

Results: After 6 months of follow up 22(91.67%) diabetic patients showed improvement in BCVA and 2(8.3%) patients showed unchanged BCVA without progression of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. All 36 non diabetic patients showed significant improvement in BCVA.

Conclusion: Final BCVA improved in majority of diabetic and non diabetic eyes except for those with macular edema and diabetic retinopathy, without progression of diabetic retinopathy after phacoemulsification.
