Purpose: To find out whether posterior capsular polishing after cortical wash during phacoemulsification is associated with decreased incidence of posterior capsular opacity (PCO) or not.

Materials Methods: Phacoemulsification was done in 216 eyes by a single surgeon in between January, 2014 to March, 2016. Square edged hydrophobic foldable intraocular lenses were implanted in all the eyes. Posterior capsular polishing was done in 115 eyes and 101 eyes were kept unpolished. Follow up was done monthly for 14 months post-operatively.

Results: Out of 101 unpolished eyes, 32 eyes (32%) developed PCO and out of 115 polished eyes, 17 eyes (15%) developed PCO (p <0.05).

Conclusion: Posterior capsular polishing is an effective measure of preventing PCO along with other preventive measures.
