Objective:To study the spectrum of affection of optic nerve in trauma cases attending RIO and their visual outcome
Method:22 eyes of 22 cases(M:F::16:6) were enrolled in this study conducted between Apr2015-Mar 2016. A detailed history, thorough general examination, complete ocular examination, CT Scans & VEP were done. Associated injuries were noted. All patients were followed up for 3 months.
Observation:Males were predominantly affected. Road traffic accident was the most common cause. Optic nerve affection ranging from mild RAPD to devastating conditions like optic nerve transection were seen. 6cases (27.27%) had PL negative VA at presentation. VA at presentation was found to be of prognostic importance.
Conclusion: Although uncommon, optic neuropathy comprises an important part of ocular trauma cases. Optic neuropathy may range from mild diminished vision to blindness. Optic neuropathy should be ruled out in all ocular trauma cases to avoid such serious complications.
