FP963 : Infection Vs Heredity: Role in Congenital Cataract

Dr. Dhrubajyoti Sarmah, Dr. Subhra Kinkor Goswami

PURPOSE: To detect the possible etiology in the origin of congenital cataract.

RESULTS: One family of three siblings with total cataract and nystagmus in both eyes, the maternal history and investigations revealed TORCH positivity of high titre.

Another family of three siblings, family history suggested that it was their third generation with congenital cataract involving all the family members. Possible autosomal dominant inheritance can be suggested in these cases.

CONCLUSION: Study highlights the benefits of pursuing a multi disciplinary investigative approach and tracing of family pedigree in all cases of congenital cataract, to arrive at a possible etiological diagnosis.
