Purpose: The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of topical 0.5% Proparacaine alone Vs combined topical & supplementary topical unpreserved 1% lignocaine in Phacoemulsification.

Method: Randomized to two groups, 25 eyes each. Group I receiving only preoperative topical 0.5% Proparacaine. Group II receiving preoperative topical 0.5% Proparacaine & supplementary topical unpreserved 1% lignocaine. Pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale at the end of the procedure. Surgeon’s and Patient’s satisfaction was also measured.

Results: There was no difference in surgeon’s and patient’s satisfaction score. However the difference in mean pain score of the two groups was statistically significant with Group II reporting lesser pain and discomfort.

Conclusion: Supplementary topical anaesthesia intraoperatively offers significant benefits over preoperative topical anaesthesia alone in phaco surgery in terms of patients comfort.
