PURPOSE:-To evaluate the characteristics of SD-OCT findings like status of the inner IS/OS junction of the photoreceptor and CFT in comparison with visual outcome and compare OCT measurements according to presence of cystoid macular edema (CME) in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients.
METHODS:-The IS/OS line was graded into three groups depending upon the IS-OS integrity. The correlations between the grade of the IS/OS, BCVA, and central foveal thickness (CFT) were determined between the CME and non-CME groups.
RESULTS: – 68 eyes of 34 R.P patients were divided into, group 1 –R.P- without CME and group 2 –R.P with CME.In both groups,IS/OS grade was significantly correlated with BCVA and CFT. In both
groups, severe IS/OS disruption was correlated with worse BCVA (P < 0.001).The CFT was significantly thinner in Grade 1 eyes than in Grades 2 and 3 (P<0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS:-The presence of the IS/OS was associated with better visual acuity and
thicker fovea in RP patients.
