FP410 : Modified Acrylic IOL : A New Hope for Micropthalmos and Microcornea with Cataract

Dr. Chandra Sekhar Sahoo,S14267

Purpose : To explain a procedure of modification of Acrylic IOL for implantation in a case of microphthalmos and microcornea.

Methods : A patient aged 18 years presented to our OP with microphthalmos and cataract in left eye and blind in Right eye. Vision was PL –Ve in OD and HM +Ve in OS. The patient was taken up for cataract extraction and corneal diameter was found to be 8mm on table. So a regular 12.5mm acrylic IOL was modified by trimming of both haptics and implanted into the eye

Results : The post op vision in the operated eye was 5/60 and the IOL was well centred in the capsular bag. There was presence of Mild Striate keratopathy  but details were clear. Patient was doing well till 6 months followup.

Conclusion : This method of Modification of IOL gives a new hope to all those patients with microphthalmos/microcornea in whom IOL implantation seems impossible
