FP532 : Optic Nerve Sheathotomy

Dr.Harshavardhan Ghorpade (G14398)

Introduction : Papillodema is a complex disorder in which visual loss is preventable but a devastating complication . There is no known method to know which eye will suffer irreversible loss and which eye will see better after a surgical intervention

Method : 28 patients operated for optic nerve sheathotomy were audited clinically and we did a multiple regression analysis to find out the factors which may be of prognostic importance

Results : Delay in presentation by 6 weeks or more after vision loss , use of acetazolamide in patients with venous sinus thrombosis , Intraocular pressure more than 20 mm mm Hg and age more than 50 years were identified as factors with poor prognosis

Discussion : – This is the first study in which clinical audit for over 2 year follow up has been done to identify causes of failure of optic nerve sheathotomy . We discuss these factors in details in this paper
