To retrospectively study the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative paediatric cataract surgery data of 1 year at a tertiary eye care hospital in Nepal. 98 eyes of 81 children underwent surgery during 2014. Main outcome measured were age, gender, aetiology, visual outcomes, visual status and complications. 54 males (66.66%) and 27 females underwent cataract surgery of which 34.56% were bilateral. 46.91% patients had a history of trauma, 94.73% being unilateral. Family history, strabismus, nystagmus, ocular abnormality and systemic association were analysed. IOL implantation with primary posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy was achieved in 80 children. Visual acuity and status improved with clear optical axis in 66 patients. Surgical and post-operative complications were noted. Poor visual acuity was mainly due to amblyopia. Paediatric cataracts constitute one of the most treatable causes of childhood blindness; however its management is more challenging than adults.
