Method : The study population comprised adult patients scheduled for elective cataract surgery. The patients were randomly assigned into three groups. First group received topical Moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops four times, one day preoperatively. The second group received topical Povidone – Iodine 5% eye drops instilled in conjunctival sac for 5 minutes immediately before surgery. The third group received a combination of both. Conjunctival cultures were obtained before prophylactic therapy and just before surgery. The major outcome measures were the rate of bacterial colonization and bacterial type in conjunctival cultures obtained before prophylactic therapy and just before surgery.

Results : Overall, 705 patients completed the study; there were 241 patients in first group and 237 patients in second group and 227 patients in third group. Positive conjunctival cultures were obtained before prophylactic therapy in 93 patients (38.59%) in first group, 97 patients (40.93%) in second group and 88 (38.77%) patients in third group.
