Aim:To study various types of eye injuries following disaster & to devise a disaster preparedness plan.
Methods:A Pub-med search was done to find out various literature on eye injuries following major disaster in the past.
Results:Types of injuries were mostly as follows: active volcanoes- irritation,abrasion & FB , earthquake -blunt trauma, cyclones & explosions- penetrating eye injuries, toxic agent-ocular s/s charecteristic to the nature of the agent. In disaster preparedness plan( after managing the life treating condition) triaging of isolated eye injuries in the emergency department can be done as following: Green- irritation, abrasions; Yellow- FB, lid laceration; Red- globe rupture. Red needs urgent management should be directed to OT. Green can be sent to OPD to be managed by some jr. doctors. In the disaster prone areas (terrorist infested areas/ areas with active volcanoes/ earthquake zones),the hospital emergency department should be equipped with emergency eye injury kits.
